Brendan Beck, the New York Yankees’ No. 11 prospect, matched his career high with nine strikeouts over seven innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday. Despite his performance, Beck took a hard-luck loss in a pitching duel against Brandon Sproat of the Syracuse Mets. Beck allowed just one run and one hit, setting down 15 consecutive batters and completing seven innings for the first time in his 33 professional appearances. He is tied for second in the Minor Leagues with 12 wins and holds a 3.11 ERA and an 0.99 WHIP across 23 outings (21 starts) at two levels this season.
Sproat also delivered a strong outing, equaling his season high with nine strikeouts and working seven scoreless innings for Syracuse. He generated 14 swings-and-misses out of 43 total swings and has recorded a 1.79 ERA with a 66/19 strikeout-to-walk ratio over his past ten starts.
Other notable performances around Minor League Baseball included Thomas White (Marlins), who struck out ten without allowing a hit over five innings for Double-A Pensacola; Hagen Smith (White Sox), who threw five scoreless frames for Birmingham; Quinn Mathews (Cardinals), who finished August with a 2.27 ERA after another scoreless start for Memphis; and Sam Aldegheri (Angels), who pitched eight shutout innings for Rocket City.
On offense, Dante Nori (Phillies) had four hits and four stolen bases in High-A Jersey Shore’s game, while Marek Houston (Twins) hit his first professional home run since being promoted to High-A Cedar Rapids.
