The New York Yankees placed Giancarlo Stanton on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain, according to an announcement on Apr. 29. The decision follows an MRI in Arlington that revealed a low-grade strain after Stanton was injured while jogging between first and second base during a game in Houston.
Stanton said he is not comforted by the diagnosis, despite it being considered minor. “At this point, there’s no real peace of mind. You’re going to be out,” Stanton said Tuesday. “It’s better [that] it won’t be a long time, but [to be] out again is not ideal.”
The Yankees had delayed making the roster move in hopes of avoiding what is now Stanton’s seventh stint on the injured list since 2021. In response to his absence, infielder Max Schuemann was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Manager Aaron Boone indicated that Schuemann may only stay briefly as right-hander Elmer RodrÃguez is set to make his Major League debut soon.
Boone addressed concerns about Stanton’s recurring lower-body injuries and said there will be more clarity regarding his return during the upcoming homestand. “It’s low-grade, so hopefully it’s not something that’s long,” Boone said. “But obviously G has had some of these lower-body issues before. We’re just going to listen to that and certainly not rush anything.”
Stanton has struggled with several injuries over recent seasons, missing time due to various leg strains and elbow issues since joining New York in 2018. This season he was batting .256 with three home runs and fourteen runs batted in across twenty-four games prior to his injury.
Looking ahead, Stanton remains cautious about rushing back into play: “I’ve got to move around, probably on the homestand, and I’ll have a better gauge,” he said. “I’m doing exercises and whatnot right now… It’s good that it’s not a high-grade [strain], but at the same time, you’ve got to make sure it doesn’t happen again and you don’t reaggravate it.”
