Yankees infielder and outfielder Amed Rosario has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a sternoclavicular joint sprain in his left shoulder. The move is retroactive to Saturday. Catcher J.C. Escarra was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill the roster spot.

Rosario sustained the injury during the 10th inning of Friday night’s game against the Houston Astros, which ended in a 5-3 loss for New York. While attempting to catch a deep fly ball hit by Yainer Diaz, Rosario collided with the right-field wall and fell to the ground. Center fielder Trent Grisham retrieved the ball and threw out Christian Walker at second base for a force play. Rosario remained on the ground for several minutes but eventually walked off under his own power.

Speaking through interpreter Marlon Abreu, Rosario said, “I remember everything about the play. I started running real fast to catch that ball. I didn’t calculate the distance correctly, and then I hit the wall hard.” He added that he felt better on Sunday and hopes to return once eligible after ten days on the IL.

Rosario joined New York following a trade with Washington on July 26. Since joining the Yankees, he has gone 3-for-7 with one RBI over four games, after posting a .270 batting average across 47 games with Washington earlier this season.

J.C. Escarra will be making his second appearance with New York this year. In his previous stint, he batted .205 over 39 games before returning to Triple-A, where he hit .385 in eight games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Escarra will serve as the team’s third catcher behind Austin Wells and Ben Rice.
