The New York Yankees secured a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday at Yankee Stadium, despite missing Aaron Judge due to a right elbow flexor strain. Ryan McMahon, recently acquired by the Yankees, made a significant impact in his debut game.
McMahon contributed offensively and defensively, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and making key plays at third base. In the second inning, he hit a double that brought home Giancarlo Stanton and Jazz Chisholm Jr., tying the score at 2. “I’m just excited to do something to help the team,” McMahon stated. “Wins are important right now.”
In addition to McMahon’s performance, Jasson Domínguez scored on a sacrifice fly by Austin Wells, and McMahon himself scored on Trent Grisham’s single. These runs were enough for pitcher Carlos Rodón to secure his 11th win of the season.
A crucial defensive play by McMahon in the fifth inning prevented Philadelphia from tying the game. After Otto Kemp’s homer narrowed the lead, Trea Turner hit towards shortstop but was thwarted by McMahon’s sliding play.
Manager Aaron Boone praised McMahon’s ease on defense: “The play he makes on Turner — [McMahon] has that kind of ease in which he does it.” Boone noted McMahon’s potential offensive contributions as well.
Reflecting on his development as a player, McMahon credited former teammates Trevor Story, Nolan Arenado, and DJ LeMahieu for their influence during his early career with the Rockies. He emphasized defense as a mental commitment: “I think it’s how you show your team that you care.”
Boone remarked on McMahon’s quick adaptation to New York: “On the surface, he looks settled and comfortable.”
