The New York Yankees advanced to the second spot in the latest Major League Baseball Power Rankings, according to an April 27 update from MLB.com. The rankings, compiled by MLB.com contributors and written by Will Leitch, reflect the standings at the end of the first full month of the MLB season.
This movement in rankings is notable as early-season results do not always predict final outcomes. Last year, for example, the team ranked number one at this time did not make the playoffs while another team that was ranked much lower went on to win their league.
Aaron Judge’s performance was highlighted as he celebrated his 34th birthday with a home run and maintains a career OPS of 1.026 through his first 1,072 games. “The only players with higher marks in their first 1,072 games are Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Frank Thomas, Todd Helton, Albert Pujols and Hank Greenberg,” Leitch wrote.
Other teams making headlines include the Los Angeles Dodgers remaining at number one despite bullpen challenges and impressive performances from pitcher Roki Sasaki. The Atlanta Braves hold third place with strong playoff odds early in the season.
As teams continue through early matchups and player milestones accumulate—such as Spencer Torkelson’s five-game home run streak for Detroit or Shane McClanahan’s return to form for Tampa Bay—the rankings will likely shift further as more games are played.
Leitch concluded that while these power rankings offer insight into current trends and standout performances across Major League Baseball clubs like the Yankees and Dodgers, much can change over coming months before postseason positions are decided.
