NEW YORK – The New York Yankees’ struggles continued on Friday night with a 12-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies at Yankee Stadium. The defeat left the Yankees trailing the Toronto Blue Jays by 5 1/2 games in the American League East race, as the Blue Jays secured a win against the Detroit Tigers.
The Yankees’ bullpen faced challenges, allowing 10 runs over 3 1/3 innings. Manager Aaron Boone noted that “all lines are in the water right now,” indicating efforts to strengthen their bullpen before Thursday’s Trade Deadline.
Luke Weaver took the mound with a slim lead of 3-2 in the seventh inning but struggled as an error allowed Philadelphia to tie and then take control of the game. Paul Goldschmidt reflected on his decision during a critical play, admitting, “I tried to get [Turner] at home. Looking back, I should have gone to first base.”
J.T. Realmuto’s three-run homer further extended Philadelphia’s lead to 6-3. The Yankees attempted a comeback in their half of the inning with Anthony Volpe hitting a solo homer and Ben Rice scoring off an Aaron Judge sacrifice fly, narrowing it to 6-5.
However, Ian Hamilton could not contain Philadelphia’s offense as Kyle Schwarber hit his second homer of the night, extending their lead to 8-5. Scott Effross also faced difficulties in the ninth inning, conceding four more runs highlighted by Bryson Stott’s two-run double.
Kyle Schwarber commented on his team’s performance saying, “I think the beautiful thing about our lineup is…we’re keeping the pressure on.”
The Yankees have won only 14 out of their last 36 games since June 13th. Goldschmidt stressed playing better baseball and reducing mistakes as keys for improvement: “The easy thing is to play better… We still have a lot of confidence in ourselves.”
