The New York Yankees are weighing their options regarding outfield prospect Spencer Jones, according to an April 25 article. Jones, who was selected out of Vanderbilt with the 25th pick in the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft, has drawn comparisons to Aaron Judge due to his size and power.
Jones’s performance in recent seasons has made him a frequent topic among Yankees fans. In 2025, he hit 35 home runs and stole 29 bases across Double-A and Triple-A, finishing with a .932 on-base plus slugging percentage. He also impressed during Spring Training by leading all Yankees players with six home runs and posting a 1.526 OPS.
Despite these achievements, Jones faces challenges as he begins this season at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He is currently batting .231/.351/.500 with five home runs and 24 RBIs in his first 22 games but continues to struggle with strikeouts—a trend that has persisted throughout his minor league career.
General manager Brian Cashman said of Jones in February after re-signing Cody Bellinger: “He’s currently blocked with us.” The team’s roster includes high-profile players such as Judge, Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton occupying the outfield and designated hitter positions. Manager Aaron Boone added during spring discussions about Jones: “There’s still improvements that he needs to make in his game… And the good thing is, he’s done that. He’s shown that.”
As the Yankees start strong this season at 16-9, there is speculation about whether they might use Jones as part of a trade package before the deadline or keep him developing at Triple-A alongside fellow prospect Jasson Domínguez. The decision could depend on both team needs at third base or bullpen depth and how well Jones continues to perform against higher-level pitching.
Looking ahead, if an opening arises in the Yankees’ outfield or if his value increases before the trade deadline, Jones could either earn a call-up or become part of efforts to address other roster needs.
