The New York Yankees have claimed right-handed pitcher Kaleb Ort off waivers from the Houston Astros, according to an announcement made Friday. Ort, 33, appeared in 49 games for Houston last season, recording a 2-2 record with one save and a 4.89 ERA. He set personal bests in games played, innings pitched (46), and strikeouts (49). The Astros had designated him for assignment on January 2.
The Yankees’ bullpen is expected to look different this year compared to last season’s Opening Day roster. David Bednar and Camilo Doval, both acquired at the Trade Deadline, are slated to fill the closer and setup roles. Returning relievers include Fernando Cruz, Brent Headrick, Tim Hill, Ryan Yarbrough, and Paul Blackburn. Meanwhile, Devin Williams and Luke Weaver left via free agency and signed with the New York Mets.
Ort was particularly effective against right-handed hitters last season, limiting them to a .188 batting average. Left-handed batters had more success against him.
Over five Major League seasons spent with the Boston Red Sox (2021-23) and Houston Astros (2024-25), Ort has accumulated a 5-7 record with two saves and a 5.00 ERA across 118 appearances. He began his professional career as a non-drafted free agent with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2016 and previously played in the Yankees’ Minor League system from 2017 to 2019.
