The New York Yankees have released their preliminary 40-man player pool for the upcoming Spring Breakout game, scheduled for March 21 at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida. The event is part of Major League Baseball’s Spring Breakout series, which features top prospects from each organization in a showcase designed to highlight emerging talent.
Carlos Lagrange, who drew attention during last year’s game by throwing a 100 mph fastball, remains a key figure among Yankees prospects. Lagrange described his participation as “a really big opportunity,” adding: “You feel good. You know you’ve worked so hard for something, and then you see the results.”
Spring Breakout will run from March 19-22 and includes 16 exhibition games featuring Minor League Baseball’s current stars at Grapefruit and Cactus League stadiums during Spring Training. MLB plans to expand the format into a single-elimination tournament in 2027.
The Yankees’ roster highlights several notable position players. George Lombard Jr., ranked No. 32 overall by MLB Pipeline, has shown defensive skill at multiple infield positions this spring. Dax Kilby, the club’s first-round pick in the 2025 MLB Draft and currently ranked No. 94 overall by MLB Pipeline, began his professional career with Single-A Tampa last season.
Spencer Jones continues to receive recognition for his power and defensive abilities in the outfield. General manager Brian Cashman noted that Jones could be starting elsewhere already; he turns 25 in May.
On the pitching side, Lagrange has impressed with a fastball reaching up to 102.1 mph this spring. Manager Aaron Boone compared him to former Yankee Dellin Betances due to his size and velocity potential.
Elmer Rodríguez is another pitcher to watch; he is ranked No. 82 overall by MLB Pipeline and was selected for Puerto Rico’s World Baseball Classic roster after showing strong command of four pitches.
Ben Hess (first-round pick in the 2024 draft) pitched last season at High-A Hudson Valley and Double-A Somerset, while Bryce Cunningham (second-round pick from Vanderbilt) also gained experience at Hudson Valley and participated in the Arizona Fall League.
Spring Breakout rosters are created in two phases: an initial submission of a preliminary player pool on March 5 followed by finalization of official rosters on March 18 using MLB Pipeline’s Top 30 Prospects lists along with additional selections by each club.
Fans can follow the Yankees’ Spring Breakout game through various platforms including MLB.TV, MLB.com, the MLB App, YES Network, or Gameday.
