The New York Yankees are in Toronto, aiming to reclaim their position at the top of the American League East. The team was previously swept by the Blue Jays in a four-game series at Rogers Centre, leading to their slip from first place.
Aaron Judge, captain of the Yankees, expressed optimism about regaining ground in Toronto. “We can’t focus on the past,” Judge stated. “So we’ve got to focus on the present and what we can do right now, and just take care of business.”
The Yankees began May with a seven-game lead in their division but have since faced challenges. After a strong 17-9 record in May, they ended June slightly below .500 and are currently 7-8 for July. Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged this performance is insufficient for winning a division title. “Not good enough to win a division, probably,” Boone commented.
Improving their record against divisional opponents is crucial for the Yankees. They have won only 10 out of 26 games against AL East teams so far. Boone emphasized that better results within the division are necessary for success.
The upcoming series against Toronto coincides with strategic planning by general manager Brian Cashman as he explores potential roster enhancements before the July 31 Trade Deadline. Cashman has indicated an active pursuit of talent, including starting pitchers and relievers.
Boone outlined clear objectives: securing a playoff spot, winning the division, and ultimately competing for championships. He noted that performing well within their division is essential.
As they prepare to face a strong Blue Jays team that has recently won ten consecutive home games, Judge acknowledged the challenge ahead: “They’re a good ballclub… Any time you play in the AL East, it’s going to be a gauntlet.”
