The New York Yankees have strengthened their roster by acquiring third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies. The trade, which involved pitching prospects Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz going to the Rockies, is aimed at addressing a key area for the Yankees. McMahon, 30, was an All-Star in the National League last season and has been notable for his defensive capabilities.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone commented on McMahon’s arrival, saying, “He has been an All-Star third baseman and a really good defender… He is a presence and can really defend over there at third base for a number of years. We are excited to get him.”
This acquisition comes ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline on July 31. The Yankees were reportedly considering other options but settled on McMahon due to his contract terms and defensive skills. Despite having less power than other potential targets like Eugenio Suárez, McMahon’s left-handed swing is expected to complement Yankee Stadium’s dimensions well.
McMahon will join established players such as Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Cody Bellinger in New York. His role with the Yankees is anticipated to be different from his time with the Rockies when he attempted to fill the shoes of departed stars like Nolan Arenado.
An NL baseball source noted that without being under pressure as he was in Colorado, McMahon should adapt well to New York. “That pressure is going to be off [McMahon]. He will be able to handle New York just fine,” said the source.
Looking forward, it remains uncertain what further moves the Yankees might make before the trade deadline. There are speculations about bolstering their pitching staff with players like Dylan Cease or Mitch Keller potentially in sight.
