For the second consecutive day, the New York Yankees have completed a trade for an experienced infielder before the July 31 Trade Deadline. On Saturday, it was announced that the Yankees reached an agreement with the Washington Nationals to acquire Amed Rosario.
In return, Washington will receive right-handed pitcher Clayton Beeter and 18-year-old outfielder Browm Martinez. Beeter is currently ranked as New York’s No. 20 prospect according to MLB Pipeline.
Rosario, aged 29, has had a batting average of .270/.310/.426 this season with five home runs over 158 plate appearances for the Nationals. He has primarily played at second base and third base but also appeared at shortstop and in the outfield.
“I know everybody [on the Yankees] … it helps a lot to go to a place where you know people or where you’ve heard great things about those guys,” said Rosario regarding his new team. “Of course it’s going to make me feel a little bit more comfortable and perform at my best.”
Rosario began his Major League career with the Mets and is now in his ninth season. This marks his third consecutive year being traded before the deadline; he was traded from the Guardians to the Dodgers in 2023 and signed with the Rays before being traded again to Los Angeles in 2024.
“I feel great because whenever teams are in playoff contention, they always acquire me towards the end,” Rosario added. “So I just feel really good about that.”
This acquisition follows closely on Friday’s trade where third baseman Ryan McMahon was brought in from Colorado, further strengthening New York’s infield depth which they were rumored to be interested in improving even after acquiring McMahon.
Rosario brings versatility as a right-handed hitter who could platoon at third base with left-handed-hitting McMahon whose performance against left-handers stands at .207/.289/.310 compared to Rosario’s .299/.333/.483 against southpaws. He can also cover other positions except first base when necessary.
Clayton Beeter was originally drafted by Los Angeles Dodgers as their supplemental second-round pick back in 2020 then joined Yankees during Joey Gallo’s transfer two years later (2022). After debuting last season appearing three times from bullpen duty within major league games so far only featuring twice earlier this month allowing six earned runs through less than four innings before being reassigned downwards onto Triple-A roster listing holding an ERA scoreline hovering around numbers standing above three points accompanied alongside thirty-three strikeouts while walking sixteen batters across twenty-plus innings pitched spanning eighteen outings altogether thus far showing promise potential future success stories possibly lying ahead waiting realization time may come soon enough perhaps someday somewhere else maybe?
