More than 50 Veterans are set to participate in the Heroes on the Hudson adaptive maritime sports clinic this Friday at Dyckman Marina in New York City. The event is designed for Veterans from New York and New Jersey, offering a full day of sailing and kayaking instruction as part of a broader rehabilitation effort.
The program focuses on disabled Veterans, providing them with opportunities to learn new skills while engaging in physical activity that supports both their mental and physical health. Participants will have the chance to connect with fellow Veterans from various generations, including those injured in recent conflicts.
Heroes on the Hudson has taken place annually since 2011, drawing participants from across New York City, New Jersey, and upstate New York. The clinic emphasizes real-world rehabilitation through recreation-based care, with an aim to foster healing and resilience among attendees.
“Bringing rehabilitation into the real world is something VA excels at, and this adaptive clinic is no different. Heroes on the Hudson provides invaluable experience to adaptive Veterans developing experience in physical activity, demonstrating that they can take control of their health, as well as be active in their community,” organizers stated.
The event is co-sponsored by VA New York Harbor Healthcare System and Wounded Warrior Project. Inwood Canoe Club will sponsor the kayak venue. Additional support comes from organizations such as Combat Wounded Veterans of America, Hudson River Community Sailing, Wheelchair Sports Federation, and Adaptive Sports Foundation.
