Two clinical leaders from Maimonides Health were named Notable Leaders in Health Care by Crain’s New York Business, according to an April 10 announcement. The recognition highlights the achievements of Dr. John Marshall, Executive Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at Maimonides Medical Center, and Donna Fitzmartin, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital.

Crain’s recognized 80 honorees across the New York City metro area for their innovative leadership in areas such as care quality, workforce development, digital health care, and accessibility.

Dr. Marshall has served as Chief Medical Officer since 2024 after joining Maimonides in 2003. He previously held several leadership roles including Chair of Emergency Medicine for twelve years. During his tenure, he led efforts that resulted in Maimonides becoming Brooklyn’s only certified Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center and expanded EMS services into the largest hospital-based ambulance service participating in New York City’s 911 system. As CMO, he oversees clinical operations and physician practice management for more than 700 physicians across inpatient and outpatient settings. “We have made incredible progress in advancing the delivery of modernized, high-quality [care] in the years since I’ve joined Maimonides,” said Dr. Marshall. “I’ve been proud to meet many significant clinical goals alongside an incredibly dedicated team of clinicians, staff, and system leaders, creating and seeing firsthand the effect of changes that directly benefit so many that rely on the Maimonides Health system.”

Donna Fitzmartin has led operations at Midwood Community Hospital since 2000 with a focus on safe patient care and operational efficiency. She partners with leadership to implement strategic initiatives while ensuring regulatory compliance and supporting workforce relations. Under her guidance, the hospital achieved reductions in readmissions as well as mortality rates among patients. Fitzmartin also has a background as a registered respiratory therapist dating back to 1988. “I’m deeply honored on behalf of myself and our Midwood team,” said Fitzmartin. “This acknowledgment underscores the many strides we have made to improve outcomes, foster operational excellence, and ensure our patients receive high-quality care.”

In addition to this year’s honorees from Maimonides Health, Ken Gibbs—President & CEO—and Boris Molchanskiy—Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer at Midwood Community Hospital—were among those recognized by Crain’s for notable leadership last year.

The annual list reflects ongoing efforts within local health systems to improve patient outcomes through innovation.
