The top four active home run hitters in Major League Baseball played in the same game for the first time since at least 1900, according to a statement released on April 15. The milestone occurred during Monday’s matchup between the Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees.
This event is significant because it brought together some of baseball’s most prolific sluggers. Mike Trout and Aaron Judge, who are second and third among active players in career home runs, both hit multiple home runs during the game. Trout reached his 409th career homer after going deep again in Tuesday’s follow-up at Yankee Stadium, while Judge now has 374 homers.
Giancarlo Stanton leads all active players with 454 career home runs, while Paul Goldschmidt holds fourth place with 373 homers—just one behind Judge. All four athletes were included in their teams’ lineups again on Tuesday night.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this marks an unprecedented occurrence dating back more than a century. “Monday’s game marked the first time since at least 1900 in which the top four active home run hitters played in the same game,” said Elias Sports Bureau.
Looking ahead, Trout is set to face every other member of MLB’s top five active home run leaders within a single week. After facing Stanton, Judge, and Goldschmidt with the Yankees, he will next play against Manny Machado of the San Diego Padres—who entered Tuesday ranked fifth among actives with 371 homers—as part of an upcoming series beginning Friday.
