Since the first surgical correction of bunions, known as hallux valgus, over 100 procedures have been developed. Recent advancements in surgeon skill and technology have brought two main procedures to the forefront: Lapidus-type fusion and minimally invasive bunion surgery. These methods address the entire 3D plane of the deformity.
Scott J. Ellis, MD, a foot and ankle surgeon at HSS, discussed these procedures in an interview with Healio. Dr. Ellis noted that despite numerous techniques being available, no perfect solution has been found yet.
“Bunion surgeries have been going on for years, and the fact that there are so many means there is not a perfect solution,” said Dr. Ellis. “Most bunion corrections are good, but not perfect in terms of achieving and maintaining correction and patients being happy with the surgery.”
