St. John’s University Libraries has been recognized with the 2025 Library Excellence in Access and Diversity (LEAD) Award by Insight Into Diversity magazine. This publication is known for its focus on diversity and inclusion within higher education.

The LEAD Award acknowledges academic libraries that have implemented diversity initiatives and programs aimed at fostering inclusive excellence for college students. These initiatives cover areas such as research, technology, accessibility, exhibitions, and community outreach.

Caroline Fuchs, University Librarian and Dean of Libraries at St. John’s University, expressed her pride in the team: “I am proud and honored to work with faculty, administrators, and staff in the University Libraries who are so committed to creating an equitable, inclusive, and welcoming environment for our students.”

Insight Into Diversity chose St. John’s University Libraries due to their ongoing commitment to innovation in equity, diversity, and inclusion. The university will be featured in the March issue of the magazine.

Benjamin Turner leads the Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, and Antiracism Committee (LIDEA) at St. John's University Libraries. He stated that LIDEA has revised policies to promote inclusivity: “These include a section on ‘Community Norms,’ which describes the library as a place of open inquiry where all people are treated with respect.”

Ann Jusino is spearheading efforts to enhance services for students with conditions like autism or ADHD. She commented on receiving the award: “This award is quite an honor,” she said. “I continue to work to improve the experience of neurodivergent students and faculty at St. John’s University through teaching and research.”

Lenore Pearlstein from Insight Into Diversity explained why they present this award: “We know that many academic libraries are not always recognized for their dedication to diversity, inclusion, and access,” she said. “We are proud to honor these college and university libraries as role models for other institutions of higher education.”
