The City University of New York (CUNY) has announced that 30 students from nine of its colleges have been awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. This scholarship, provided by the U.S. Department of State, offers financial support for study abroad opportunities to undergraduates who face financial constraints.
Among the recipients are seven students from The City College of New York, six from Baruch College, five from Lehman College and Macaulay Honors College, four from Hunter College, three from Brooklyn College, two from LaGuardia Community College, and one each from Borough of Manhattan Community College, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and Queens College.
CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez expressed his congratulations: “We congratulate the 30 CUNY students who have earned this incredible opportunity to study abroad and take their higher education experience to the next level.” He added that these students would represent CUNY well globally as they enhance their learning experiences.
The Gilman Scholarship provides up to $5,000 to those traditionally underrepresented in international education programs. This includes financially disadvantaged students, those with disabilities, students of color, and community college attendees. Statistics indicate that only 1.5% of associate degree students studied abroad during the 2022-23 academic year.
Three community college students are among CUNY’s awardees. Quashawna Hutcherson and Laniel Collazo from LaGuardia Community College plan to use their scholarships for studies in Japan this summer as part of their Japanese Studies program.
Administered by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, applicants must show financial need as federal Pell Grant recipients. Applications for future scholarships will be available in mid-January.
The Bureau recently recognized ten CUNY colleges as 2024 Fulbright Hispanic-Serving Institution Leaders due to their active participation with the Fulbright Program.
