The City University of New York (CUNY) has announced that Hunter College alumna Emily Springer has been awarded the 2025 Marshall Scholarship. This prestigious award, funded by the British government, allows recipients to pursue graduate-level studies at any university in the United Kingdom.
Springer graduated summa cum laude from Hunter College in 2023 with a bachelor's degree in Africana, Puerto Rican, and Latino studies, along with a certificate in arts management and leadership. She is currently employed as the program administrator for the Mellon Public Humanities and Social Justice Scholars Program at Hunter.
CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez expressed his congratulations: “We extend our congratulations to one of our own, Emily Springer, on her earning the coveted Marshall Scholarship and gaining the opportunity to expand on her Hunter College education across the pond.” He added confidence in her ability to represent CUNY's mission strongly at the University of London.
Springer plans to study cultural studies and audio journalism at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her focus will be on exploring jazz evolution in the U.K., an interest sparked during her teenage years in Montclair, New Jersey. During her time at Hunter College, she was involved as a DJ for WHCS, the college’s student-run online radio station.
Hunter College President Nancy Cantor praised Springer's accomplishments: “Emily represents so much of what Hunter has been for generations of students: a place where you can explore the full breadth of who you are as you strive to make an impact on the world.”
Since completing her degree at Hunter College, Springer has gained experience working as a production assistant for the Montclair Jazz Festival and reporting for WBGO 88.3 FM in Newark.
Springer is CUNY's 10th recipient of the Marshall Scholarship and follows Gabriella Cook-Francis from Hunter College who received it in 2019.
The Marshall Scholarship Program was established by British Parliament in 1953 as a tribute to former U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall. It honors American support post-World War II by providing educational opportunities in the U.K., with over 2,200 Americans having participated since its inception.
CUNY is recognized as a major urban public university dedicated to social mobility and quality education for all students regardless of background or financial means.
