The School of Education Awards Ceremony Celebrates Achievements of Future Educators

In a recent ceremony at the School of Education, James D. Wolfinger, Ph.D., Dean, emphasized the importance of education, quoting philosopher John Dewey by stating, “Education is life itself.” Dr. Wolfinger highlighted the mission of St. John’s University to work together in the community to enhance common humanity and create stronger communities.

Student speaker Thomas P. Blanc ’23Ed shared his unique journey to becoming an educator, expressing gratitude towards his professors and classmates for their support during his academic endeavors. Blanc emphasized the impact of student teaching in confirming his vocation, stating, “Being in the field and experiencing life as a teacher... solidified that this is my calling.”

Liyuan Zhu, who received the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Master’s Degree Award, reflected on the challenges of balancing studies, family, and work, stating, “Receiving this award has reaffirmed that every effort was worthwhile.” Another awardee, Claudia Rose Addeo, recipient of the John Beach Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Ph.D. in Literacy program, shared her journey of overcoming learning challenges, expressing gratitude for the support she received and emphasizing that “anything is possible if you believe in yourself.”

The ceremony celebrated the achievements of future educators and highlighted the dedication and hard work of students in the School of Education.
