Dear fellow members of the Columbia community:
In a recent communication, Columbia University President Minouche Shafik addressed the ongoing situation at the Morningside campus, where student activists have established an encampment on the West Lawn for nearly four days. Shafik emphasized the importance of free speech and the right to demonstrate but highlighted the safety concerns and disruptions caused by the encampment.
Shafik stated, "It is essential that we move forward with a plan to dismantle it," underscoring the need to address the encampment promptly. Discussions have been ongoing between a small group of faculty, administrators, and University Senators in an attempt to reach an agreement with the student organizers before a midnight deadline tonight.
Expressing hope for successful resolutions in the discussions, Shafik warned of the consideration of alternative options if an agreement is not reached. She mentioned the importance of restoring calm to the campus environment to allow students to complete the term and graduate, particularly acknowledging the challenges faced by graduating seniors who spent their first year at Columbia remotely.
Furthermore, Shafik made it clear that intimidating, harassing, or discriminatory behavior would not be tolerated. Efforts are underway to identify protestors who violated policies against discrimination and harassment, who will face appropriate disciplinary actions.
Acknowledging the support of City and State officials in managing the ongoing crisis, Shafik highlighted the influx of outside protestors around the campus perimeter, contributing to heightened security concerns and escalating tensions within the community.
Additional updates on the situation are expected to be provided tomorrow.
Sincerely,
Minouche Shafik
President, Columbia University in the City of New York
