In a joint statement released on April 26, 2024, David Greenwald, Claire Shipman, Minouche Shafik, and Angela Olinto, prominent figures at Columbia University, addressed the current tensions and disruptions on campus.

The leaders emphasized their commitment to upholding the academic mission while ensuring campus safety and fairness in rule enforcement. They expressed concern about recent events and reiterated their stance on not bringing back the NYPD to campus, citing potential escalation and threats to the community.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by students amidst the disruptions, the leaders condemned antisemitic expressions and threats towards Jewish individuals on campus. They made it clear that such behavior is unacceptable and that those involved will face consequences, with one individual already banned from campus.

The statement also highlighted the importance of academic freedom, a discrimination-free environment, and the need for a safe resolution to the ongoing crisis. The leaders expressed support for ongoing conversations with student leaders and academic guidance to achieve a peaceful resolution.

The Columbia University leaders called for progress towards a safer campus atmosphere and assured the community of further updates to be shared. They concluded the statement by emphasizing the importance of resolving the situation to ensure a smooth completion of the semester and a celebratory commencement for graduating students and their families.
