Assemblyman Michael Tannousis (R,C-Staten Island, Brooklyn) has passed a resolution that recognizes the invasion of Cyprus on its 50th dark anniversary. Tannousis, speaking as the son of Cypriot refugees, highlighted the impact of the invasion on Greek Cypriots, stating, "As the son of Cypriot refugees, my family suffered a great injustice in 1974 when the Turkish military invaded Cyprus."
The invasion, which took place on July 20, 1974, led to the displacement of 150,000 Greek Cypriots from their homes, with many seeking refuge in the United States, particularly in New York City. The United Nations Security Council had deemed the invasion as "illegally invalid."
Tannousis expressed his commitment to ensuring that the struggles faced by Cypriots are not forgotten and emphasized the ongoing fight for justice, saying, "It is my duty to sponsor this resolution which will ensure that the struggle of Cypriots is never forgotten and that we will continue the fight for justice."
The resolution passed by Assemblyman Tannousis serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of the invasion and continued occupation of Cyprus, shedding light on a significant chapter in the history of the region.
