State Assemblyman Tannousis has expressed concerns over Governor Hochul's executive budget proposal, particularly focusing on public safety and financial priorities in New York. In a statement made on Jan 16, 2024, Tannousis criticized the Governor's approach, emphasizing the need for accountability in the criminal justice system.
"We need to hold violent criminals accountable for their actions with a tough-on-crime criminal justice system," Tannousis stated. He went on to critique Governor Hochul's plan, stating, "She intends to create a task force to address the public safety crisis. You do not need a task force to tell you that you must hold criminals accountable for their actions."
Tannousis raised concerns about the financial implications of the Governor's proposal, stating, "This problem will not go away by spending money that New York does not have." He also highlighted what he perceives as a lack of attention to the migrant crisis, noting that "both our city and state are on the verge of financial ruin."
The Assemblyman questioned the allocation of funds, particularly citing the proposed $140 million budget for teaching New York residents how to swim. He quipped, "Perhaps the swimming lessons will be useful as New Yorkers try to escape the sinking ship."
Tannousis's criticisms reflect a broader concern regarding the allocation of resources and priorities in addressing the challenges facing New York state. Governor Hochul's budget proposal continues to face scrutiny and debate as stakeholders express varying opinions on the best path forward.
