New York City suffers seven shooting incidents in week ending Dec. 31, 2023

New York City police handled seven shooting incidents in the week ending Dec. 31, 2023, according to New York Police Department (NYPD) crime statistics.

This equals one incident per day, down 69.6% from the week before, and 63 in the last 28 days.

The NYPD has grappled with 974 shooting incidents so far in 2023.

New York City saw a significant drop in overall crime rates, as the number of shooting incidents fell 26.1% and homicides dropped by 11.4% from March 2022 to March 2023.

Arrests in NYC are at a 24-year high, increasing 15% during the first quarter of 2023 compared to last year.

Still, Police Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell stated that “felony assaults and grand larceny autos remain persistent issues.”
