New York City police handled 930 misdemeanor assaults in the week ending Dec. 31, 2023, according to New York Police Department (NYPD) crime statistics.

This equals 133 incidents per day, up 18.2% from the week before, and 3,420 in the last 28 days.

The NYPD has grappled with 44,172 misdemeanor assaults so far in 2023.

New York City saw a significant drop in overall crime rates, as the number of shooting incidents fell 26.1% and homicides dropped by 11.4% from March 2022 to March 2023.

Arrests in NYC are at a 24-year high, increasing 15% during the first quarter of 2023 compared to last year.

Still, Police Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell stated that “felony assaults and grand larceny autos remain persistent issues.”
