‘Teaching Asian Pacific American History Act’ to Require Inclusion of AAPI History in American History Curriculums
Washington D.C. - Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today joined Congresswoman Grace Meng (NY-6) in introducing the Teaching Asian Pacific American History Act. This legislation would require Presidential and Congressional Academies’ grant applicants and recipients to include Asian Pacific American history in American history and civics curriculums. The Teaching Asian Pacific American History Act would also encourage the inclusion of Asian Pacific American history within national and state testing programs as well as promote collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution’s Asian Pacific American Center to develop AAPI educational programing.
“The AAPI community has been integral to the fabric of our nation’s history, with contributions ranging from arts and infrastructure to the economy and military service,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “For far too long, the AAPI community has been left out of our history books and history lessons, leaving a gaping hole in our educational system. I am committed to serving and elevating the unique experiences of the AAPI community and ensuring that our children receive a well-rounded, comprehensive American history education.”
As an Executive Board Member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, Congressman Goldman is committed to serving the vibrant AAPI communities across the country. With the recent rise in anti-Asian hate crimes, Congressman Goldman demanded action from law enforcement agencies on the under-reporting of hate crimes nationwide. The Congressman has also been vocal in condemning xenophobic and racist rhetoric aimed at the AAPI community.
