WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Gregory W. Meeks (NY-05) released the following statement on passage of HR 2:

“Speaker McCarthy and House Republicans authored and passed a bill that keeps Trump-era immigration policies in place and does nothing but punish those who are fleeing extreme violence and persecution. As Title 42 – a policy that I have long fought to end – expires and the crisis at the border continues, Congress needs to work together to create a viable path forward to fix our broken immigration system.

“Now is the time to pass comprehensive immigration reform. It is NOT the time to turn our backs on asylum seekers.

“The Republican’s cruel bill will not modernize our immigration laws, but would wreck our economy, cripple our ports of entry and destroy the asylum system.

“While ending Title 42 is taking the correct course, it is imperative that Congress works together to deliver bipartisan and humane legislation that strengthens our country’s immigration system.”
