Meagan Sills, a 2006 graduate of St. John’s University’s Staten Island campus, has been appointed president of Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH), the largest hospital in the borough. Sills, who was born and raised in Staten Island, started her career at SIUH in 2009 as a medical education coordinator and has since advanced through several leadership roles.
“My dream was to become a police officer in New York City,” Sills said. “I come from a blue-collar family, where my father, brother, and uncle were police officers, so I took the test. Later, my brother said that, knowing my strong-minded personality, he did not think it was a career I should pursue. So, I thought I would be a court officer. I took the court officer test, but then I got an offer from Staten Island University Hospital. I did not know the path would lead me this way.”
The hospital is part of Northwell Health and operates two campuses with 668 beds combined. It provides care for approximately 40,000 inpatients and 200,000 outpatients each year; its emergency rooms see about 100,000 visits annually.
Sills held the position of deputy president from September 2021 until her promotion to president in September 2025. Outgoing Executive Director Brahim Ardolic commented on her contributions: “For more than a decade, Meagan was central to our transformation, earning the trust of our staff, physicians, and patients. She is a leader whose vision, skill, and commitment will carry the hospital to even greater heights.”
In her new role as president of SIUH, Sills manages daily operations and long-term planning across both campuses with attention to clinical quality and patient safety. Her responsibilities include directing capital projects such as facility renovations and advanced clinical programs while supporting workforce development initiatives.
During her time at SIUH—particularly after Hurricane Sandy in 2012—Sills supervised over $100 million worth of infrastructure improvements focused on strengthening power systems for resiliency.
She holds an MBA from Wagner College (2014) and continues to live with her family on Staten Island.
Reflecting on how her education influenced her approach to leadership challenges at SIUH she stated: “It all goes back to the core education,” she said. “I think about the psychology classes for example. When I face a tough interaction with people I try to understand where the person is coming from so that my reaction has a broader perspective and I react correctly. The education that I received allows me to do that.”
Under Sills’ tenure at SIUH major initiatives included opening specialized centers such as the Florina Cancer Center—which unites specialists for complex cancer cases—the Gruppuso Family Women and Newborn Center which expanded maternity services access—and the Lois & Richard Nicotra Heart Institute which strengthened regional cardiovascular care.
