Giancarlo Stanton, entering his ninth season with the New York Yankees, continues to pursue a World Series title that has so far eluded him and his team. Stanton, who joined the Yankees before the 2018 season after winning the National League MVP award, was expected to help lead the club to championships alongside Aaron Judge. Despite notable performances and home run totals from both players, the team has not yet secured a championship during Stanton’s tenure.

Stanton reflected on this gap in his career achievements, stating, “You’ve got to get over the hump. Obviously, the goal is the World Series. The goal is a championship, but you’ve got to do what’s in between – not to get there, but to complete it.” He emphasized that without a ring, his time in New York would be “an incomplete story.”

The closest Stanton and the Yankees have come was during their 2024 playoff run. Stanton was named Most Valuable Player of the American League Championship Series after a strong performance against Cleveland (the Guardians). However, they lost in five games to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. Following that defeat, when players received their AL championship rings at an event in Manhattan, Stanton told teammates: “This isn’t the one we wanted.”

Looking ahead to 2026, Stanton and manager Aaron Boone are optimistic about his physical condition. Boone noted improvements in Stanton’s fitness: “He had a good winter. He’s always in good shape, but he looks really good to me, really lean. He’s jumping into all the drills, ready to go right now. I feel like we’re in a good spot right now.” Last season saw Stanton hit 24 home runs over 77 games with a .273/.350/.594 slash line despite dealing with tennis elbow issues.

Stanton acknowledged that while discomfort from his elbow injury remains and will require ongoing maintenance—“It’s not going anywhere,” he said—it did not prevent him from preparing for this season.

Boone indicated he would ease Stanton into Grapefruit League play and expects most of his appearances will continue as designated hitter but left open some potential outfield duties.

Reflecting on his original goals upon joining New York and looking forward to future opportunities for success with largely unchanged teammates competing in a strong AL East division led by teams like Toronto (the Blue Jays), Stanton concluded: “The story is still being written. But the point of being a Yankee is being a champion. There’s always going to be a stain there without that.”
