St. Mary’s Healthcare has appointed Dr. Brian McDermott as vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer. The decision follows Dr. McDermott’s recognized experience in clinical leadership, safety, and quality improvement over his 16 years working in the Capital Region.

Dr. McDermott is known for building consensus among healthcare teams and improving care coordination and patient outcomes. He was also involved in shaping the response of regional hospitals to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Dr. McDermott has led some of the region’s most effective infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship initiatives and, as a result, has had a powerful, positive impact on patient care,” said Jeff Methven, president and CEO of St. Mary’s Healthcare. “His deep understanding of patient, provider and organizational perspectives and needs, coupled with his collaborative leadership approach, will prove invaluable as St. Mary’s continues to evolve to best serve our community.”

Before joining St. Mary’s Healthcare, Dr. McDermott served as division chief for infectious disease and medical director for infection prevention at Saratoga Hospital. His previous roles include physician advisor, associate chief medical officer, and senior vice president for clinical integration at Glens Falls Hospital. He also worked as an infectious disease physician at Hudson Headwaters Health Network in Queensbury.

Dr. McDermott graduated from Columbia University in New York City and earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine on Long Island. He completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in infectious disease at Winthrop University Hospital on Long Island and holds an MBA in healthcare management from the University of Scranton.

He is board certified in internal medicine and infectious disease and is a member of several professional organizations including the Infectious Disease Society of America, American College of Physicians, and American College of Healthcare Executives.

St. Mary’s Healthcare serves Montgomery and Fulton counties through its hospital, outpatient pavilion, and other facilities as an independent local healthcare system providing critical services to its community.
