St. John’s University women’s tennis team will begin its BIG EAST conference schedule on Friday against the University of Connecticut at the USTA National Tennis Center, with play starting at 12:15 p.m.

The Red Storm currently have a 5-3 record for the season. Their most recent match resulted in a 4-0 loss to Yale on February 14. Alicia Gomez has led St. John’s this year, achieving a combined record of 12-1 and remaining undefeated in singles matches at 5-0. She and her doubles partner, Abi Redman, have recorded a 7-1 record so far and secured a win in their last match against Yale on the No. 1 doubles court.

UConn comes into Friday’s contest with a season record of 5-1. After opening with a victory over Fairfield and then losing to Army, the Huskies have won four consecutive matches, including their latest win over Quinnipiac by a score of 5-2. The game against St. John’s is the first in a series of three away matches for UConn.

Last season, UConn won the BIG EAST regular-season title under head coach Laura Glitz, finishing with a conference record of 9-1 and an overall mark of 16-5.

Friday’s match will be the fifteenth meeting between St. John’s and UConn since their first encounter in 2004. St. John’s leads the all-time series with thirteen wins to one loss; however, UConn won their most recent matchup in Storrs.

After facing UConn, St. John’s will next play New Haven at home on February 27 at the same venue.
