The St. John’s women’s tennis team began their BIG EAST season with a 4-2 win over UConn on Friday in Queens, New York. The Red Storm now hold a 6-3 overall record and are 1-0 in conference play.
St. John’s secured the doubles point after Alicia Gomez and Abi Redman defeated Victoria Matos and Ela Platenikova 6-3 on the No. 1 court, improving their partnership record to 8-1 this season. Charlotta Buss and Nao Kojima then clinched the doubles point for St. John’s with a 6-4 victory over Cameron Didion and Isabella Asenov.
In singles play, UConn took early control by winning matches on courts two and six. However, Abi Redman earned her second win of the day by beating Cameron Didion 6-3, 6-4 on court four to tie the match at two points each.
Nao Kojima followed with a three-set win against Victoria Matos (6-0, 4-6, 6-3), giving St. John’s a one-point lead. On the top court, Victoria Papadopolou sealed the team’s victory with a straight sets win over Ela Platenikova (6-3, 6-4).
This result extends St. John’s dominance over UConn to a record of 14 wins and one loss since 2004.
The Red Storm will next face New Haven at the USTA National Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 27, with first serve set for 12:15 p.m.
