St. John’s women’s basketball team began 2026 with a strong win over DePaul, securing a 75-58 victory at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, New York. The Red Storm improved their season record to 12-3 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST Conference.
Four St. John’s players—Beautiful Waheed, Sa’Mya Wyatt, Shaulana Wagner, and Daniela Abies—each scored 11 points. The team was efficient offensively, shooting 58.3% from the field and scoring 42 points in the paint.
Defensively, St. John’s tied its season-high with 12 blocked shots. Waheed and Brooke Moore each recorded four blocks, while Kylie Lavelle contributed three more. This matched the program’s highest total since setting a school record of 16 blocks against Saint Peter’s on December 1, 2020.
Abies matched her season-high in scoring for the second consecutive game and made five of six attempts from the field.
For DePaul (3-13, 0-5 BIG EAST), Alayna West led all scorers with 14 points and collected six rebounds.
St. John’s started quickly with an early lead and maintained control throughout the first half, ending it ahead by four points at 31-27. A strong third quarter saw the Red Storm outscore DePaul by 18 points to build a decisive advantage heading into the final period.
DePaul managed to score 23 points in the fourth quarter but could not close the gap as St. John’s maintained their lead for a double-digit win.
St. John’s next game will be against top-ranked UConn at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, Connecticut on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
