St. John’s University’s women’s basketball team is set to host Georgetown University on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for Senior Night and the BIG EAST Black Fives game at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, New York. The event will be streamed live on ESPN+ with commentary from Maria Marino and Edona Thaqi.

The Red Storm will recognize four graduating players, two graduate students, and five student managers during the Senior Night ceremony. In partnership with the BIG EAST Conference and the Black Fives Foundation, the program will also honor African American contributions to basketball before the NBA and WNBA eras.

Johnnies Day festivities coincide with this matchup, encouraging students, alumni, employees, and supporters to show their school spirit throughout the week. The Alumni Office will hold a pre-game reception at Marillac Hall’s 1870 court starting at 4:30 p.m., offering appetizers and a drink voucher. Fans who present a game ticket receive free entry to this event. Additionally, attendees will receive a Johnnies Day poster during halftime.

In their last game, St. John’s (20-8 overall; 10-7 in conference) secured a win over Butler on February 14 with a score of 58-47 after a strong third quarter performance. Head coach Joe Tartamella achieved his sixth season with at least 20 wins in his 14-year tenure. The team shot 41.5% from the field, made one-third of its three-point attempts, and converted over 82% of free throws.

All participating Red Storm players scored against Butler; Sa’Mya Wyatt led with 12 points while Janeya Grant added ten points. Daniela Abies collected twelve rebounds for St. John’s as they held Butler without any double-digit scorers.

Wyatt was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her second consecutive week—her third selection this season—after averaging fourteen points across two games including sixteen against DePaul and twelve versus Butler.

Defensively, St. John’s has been effective throughout its season so far; it ranks third in blocks per game within the conference (4.8) and sits at number twenty-eight nationally in that category according to NCAA statistics (https://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-women/d1/current/team/137). Beautiful Waheed is fifth among league players individually by averaging just over one block per contest.

Wednesday’s meeting marks the seventy-seventh all-time matchup between St. John’s and Georgetown (12-13 overall; 5-11 conference), with St. John’s leading the series forty-four wins to thirty-two—including victories in four of their last five home meetings at Carnesecca Arena (https://redstormsports.com/sports/womens-basketball/opponent-history/georgetown-university/23). Earlier this year on January thirteenth, Georgetown defeated St. John’s on its home court despite Wyatt recording eleven points and tying her career-high thirteen rebounds.

Georgetown comes into this contest following five straight losses since January twenty-ninth—all but one decided by eight points or fewer—and most recently fell to Providence by five points on Valentine’s Day.

Khai Miller leads Georgetown offensively with an average of just over ten points per game while shooting more than eighty-three percent from both field goals and free throws—a mark that places her third among BIG EAST players for free throw percentage (https://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-women/d1/current/individual/157). The Hoyas are recognized for bench production—ranking third in league play—and offensive rebounding where they are second within the conference as well as sixty-fifth nationally (https://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-women/d1/current/team/134).

After facing Georgetown on Wednesday night, St. John’s will travel to Seton Hall for its final regular-season road game scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
