St. John’s women’s basketball team is set to host Butler at Carnesecca Arena in Queens on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Maria Marino and Tykera Carter providing commentary.
The event coincides with Girl Scout Day, where all attendees will receive a St. John’s themed Girl Scout patch. Tickets are available for purchase online or via email.
St. John’s enters the matchup with a 13-4 overall record and a 3-3 mark in BIG EAST play. In their most recent outing, the Red Storm lost to top-ranked UConn, 88-43, at PeoplesBank Arena. Junior guard Beautiful Waheed led St. John’s with 14 points, marking her third consecutive game scoring in double figures. The team out-rebounded UConn 28–15, limiting the Huskies to their lowest rebound total of the season and becoming only the third team this year to win the rebounding battle against them. Daniela Abies contributed a game-high six rebounds.
Through 17 games, St. John’s has maintained an efficient offense, shooting 47.2% from the field—second best in the BIG EAST and ranking 22nd nationally. Junior guard Brooke Moore leads the Red Storm in scoring with an average of 13.9 points per game and holds a field goal percentage of 56.7%. She also ranks second in the conference and 44th nationally for free throws made.
Graduate student guard Shaulana Wagner leads both the BIG EAST and ranks 35th nationally by averaging 5.2 assists per game.
Saturday’s contest marks the 24th meeting between St. John’s and Butler since Butler joined the conference in January 2014. St. John’s leads the all-time series, winning 18 of their previous encounters including nine of their last ten games against Butler. In their latest matchup during the first round of last season’s BIG EAST Tournament, St. John’s secured a 66–50 victory led by Skye Owen who scored 13 points and recorded five steals.
Butler arrives at Carnesecca Arena with a three-game losing streak and holds a record of 7–9 overall (1–5 BIG EAST). Most recently, they were defeated by Georgetown, 63–46, on Jan. 7 in Indianapolis.
Lily Seinstra is Butler’s leading scorer at an average of 9.4 points per game while also contributing three assists per contest along with rebounds and steals on defense. Saniya Jackson follows closely behind at just over nine points per game and leads her team defensively with nearly two steals per contest—a figure that places her eighth among conference players.
After facing Butler, St. John’s will travel to Washington D.C., where they will play Georgetown on Jan. 13 at McDonough Arena.
