St. John’s women’s basketball team secured a 73-66 victory over Marquette on Monday night at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee. This win brings St. John’s record to 12-3 overall and 2-2 in BIG EAST conference play, while Marquette falls to 8-5 overall and also 2-2 in the conference.
The Red Storm had five players score in double figures for the first time this season. Beautiful Waheed, a native of Milwaukee, led the team with 14 points during her return home. Shaulana Wagner contributed 11 points and recorded a game-high nine assists, narrowly missing a double-double.
Brooke Moore added 13 points, Jailah Donald scored a season-high 12 points on efficient shooting, and Daniela Abies provided 11 points along with eight rebounds off the bench. Kylie Lavelle also played a significant role with seven points, eight rebounds, and three blocks.
St. John’s outrebounded Marquette by a margin of 40-33, with Lavelle and Abies each collecting eight boards.
The game saw several momentum shifts. St. John’s opened up with a strong transition offense and took an early lead following a 7-0 run. By halftime, they held a four-point advantage after Wagner made a long-range three-pointer at the buzzer.
Both teams exchanged leads throughout the third quarter before St. John’s pulled ahead late in the final period behind key plays from Waheed and Lavelle. In the closing minutes, St. John’s defense limited Marquette to just one field goal on seven attempts as Donald and Waheed converted free throws to secure the win.
Following this road victory, St. John’s will host DePaul at Carnesecca Arena on New Year’s Day.
