The St. John’s baseball team secured a 3-2 win over Charlotte on March 14, taking the series at Hayes Stadium.

The result is significant for St. John’s, which improved its record to 7-11 by holding off the 49ers (12-6) in a closely contested game. Strong pitching and timely hitting allowed the Red Storm to clinch the series victory.

Adam Agresti contributed early with a two-run home run in the first inning, marking his fifth consecutive game with a homer. Jon LeGrande went 3-for-4 and drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. Starting pitcher Evan Chaffee delivered six innings, allowing two runs and striking out three to earn the win. Dylan Johnson entered as closer in the eighth inning and recorded his second save of the season.

Charlotte tied the game by scoring once each in the second and third innings, but St. John’s regained control when Rob Mansour scored on LeGrande’s single in the seventh. The Red Storm defense prevented Charlotte from capitalizing on late opportunities, including a bases-loaded threat in the eighth inning that ended with a flyout to right field.

In their final offensive chance, St. John’s put Ayden Frey into scoring position but could not add insurance runs. Johnson finished off Charlotte’s last rally with a swinging strikeout to end the game.

St. John’s will conclude its series against Charlotte with another matchup scheduled for Sunday at Hayes Stadium.
