The Institute for Catholic Schools (ICS), part of The School of Education at St. John’s University, has donated approximately $2,800 worth of academic and sensory learning materials to Father Vincent Capodanno Catholic Academy (FVCCA) on Staten Island. FVCCA is one of the few Catholic elementary schools in the area that offers a special education program.

Following the loss of grant funding that previously supported its special education services, FVCCA sought assistance from ICS. Theresa Hollnsteiner, a research teacher and alumna of St. John’s University, contacted her former institution for help.

ICS responded by providing resources chosen by faculty members to enhance classroom instruction and support students with various learning needs. The donation included math manipulatives, fidget spinners, and Playfoam. These tools are intended to reinforce key subjects such as math, reading, and science while also creating an inclusive environment through multisensory educational approaches.

Three representatives from The School of Education—Aliya E. Holmes, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Innovation and Partnerships; Robert DiNardo, Director of ICS; and Lisa Ninnivaggio, Budget and Planning Coordinator—delivered the items directly to FVCCA classrooms and encouraged students in their studies.

Administrators at FVCCA expressed appreciation for the donation and said these resources will help maintain high-quality education amid financial challenges.

The Institute for Catholic Schools described itself as a leader in supporting Catholic education throughout the New York City metropolitan area. For more information or to offer support, individuals can contact Director Robert DiNardo or Dean James Wolfinger.
