The St. John’s men’s tennis team ended its road trip in Fort Myers, Florida, with one win and one loss. The team, led by Head Coach Dillon Pottish, now holds a 10–2 record for the season.
On Thursday, St. John’s overcame Mercer with a 4–3 victory after losing the doubles point early in the match. Adam Groves and Semen Agynskyy won their doubles match 6–2 against Aldaz Alviz and Davila Gasser, but Mercer took the overall doubles point by winning on the No. 3 court.
Agynskyy then tied the score at one with a 6–1, 6–1 singles win over Alviz on court three. After Mercer regained the lead, Sergej Zivkovic brought St. John’s back even with a 6–3, 6–2 win against Howell Burns on court six. Radomir Tomic gave St. John’s its first lead by defeating Hod’Abalo Isak Padio 6–3, 7–5 on court one. The match was tied again before David Petrovic secured the team’s win by beating Nemanja Stefanovic in three sets: 6–4, 4–6, 6–4.
On Friday against Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), St. John’s took an early lead by winning the doubles point. Raicevic and Tomic defeated Mike Bunjes and Gustav Hasslegren 6–3 on court two, while Agynskyy and Groves clinched the doubles point with a 6–4 victory over Stefan Correra and Stavros Hadjivarnava on court three.
However, FGCU responded by winning four consecutive singles matches to take a 4–1 win over St. John’s.
St. John’s Red Storm Men’s Tennis competes in NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics within the Big East Conference as part of St. John’s University. The program is known for its collegiate competitions and is represented by the Red Storm mascot.
After this series of matches in Florida, St. John’s will return home to host Creighton at the USTA National Tennis Center in Queens on March 13 at 1 p.m.
