The St. John’s men’s tennis team secured a 4-0 win over VCU on Friday at Cunningham Park, bringing their season record to 6-1 and extending their current winning streak to three matches.
In doubles play, Adam Groves and Semen Agynskyy won 6-1 against Patrik Petera and Kostiantyn Mantach on the No. 3 court. Armando Sotelo and Taichi Wakamatsu followed with another 6-1 victory over Erwann Bouchet and Mats Bredschneijder on the No. 1 court, earning the doubles point for St. John’s.
Semen Agynskyy continued his strong performance in singles by defeating Erwann Bouchet in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, giving St. John’s a 2-0 lead. On the No. 2 court, David Petrovic came back after losing the first set to defeat Nicolo Consonni, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Radomir Tomic clinched the match for St. John’s with a three-set win over Mats Bredschneijder on the No. 5 court: 0-6, 6-3, 6-2.
With this result, St. John’s evens its all-time series against VCU at two wins each since their first meeting in 2012.
The scheduled match against Penn was postponed due to weather conditions; it has been rescheduled for March 25 in Philadelphia with details about start time to be announced later.
St. John’s Red Storm Men’s Tennis competes as part of NCAA Division I athletics within the Big East Conference and is affiliated with St. John’s University (official website). Following this victory, St. John’s will travel to Cleveland State for their next match scheduled for February 27 at 6 p.m.
