St. John’s men’s basketball team, ranked No. 25 in the USA TODAY Coaches poll, will face Georgetown on December 31 at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The game is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. and will be broadcast on FS1 with Ed Cohen and Phil Martelli providing commentary.

Radio coverage will be available through the LEARFIELD St. John’s Radio Network, featuring John Minko and Vin Parise on ESPN New York 1050 AM, as well as several streaming platforms including the ESPN New York App, Varsity Network, TuneIn, Sirius XM Channel 210 or 203, the SiriusXM App and the St. John’s Red Storm App.

The Red Storm recently ended non-conference play with an 85-59 win over Harvard. Ian Jackson, Bryce Hopkins and Zuby Ejiofor each scored 14 points in that game at Carnesecca Arena. Under head coach Rick Pitino, St. John’s has maintained a perfect record of 19-0 at their home venue since his arrival.

Zuby Ejiofor was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll following his performance against Harvard where he contributed 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists. He currently averages 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.5 blocks per game; his block average ranks him fourteenth nationally among NCAA Division I players.

St. John’s returned to the USA TODAY Coaches poll this week after being absent for one week and has appeared in eighteen of the last nineteen polls since January 20, 2025.

The team holds an overall record of eight wins and four losses (1-0 in BIG EAST play). On December 16 they secured their fifth consecutive conference opener victory by defeating DePaul in Queens.

This season St. John’s is averaging 18.3 fastbreak points per game—eleventh best nationally—and leads the BIG EAST in both free throw attempts (27.9) and makes (20.8) per game as of December 29.

Wednesday’s matchup marks the first time St. John’s will play its second most frequent opponent on New Year’s Eve; they lead Georgetown in all-time meetings with a record of sixty-nine wins to fifty-seven losses and have won their last nine games against them.

Last season at Capital One Arena, St. John’s defeated Georgetown by a score of sixty-six to forty-one—the lowest point total ever allowed by a St. John’s BIG EAST opponent over forty-six years of league play.

The Red Storm’s current nine-game winning streak against Georgetown is their second longest in series history; their longest streak lasted ten games from February 1949 to December 1972.

St. John’s aims for its first win on New Year’s Eve since defeating Utah seventy-three to sixty-five at Madison Square Garden during the ECAC Holiday Festival on December 31,1960.

Georgetown enters Wednesday’s contest with a nine-and-four overall record (1-1 BIG EAST), having won three out of their last four games and holding a seven-and-one home record this season under head coach Ed Cooley’s leadership.

Guards Malik Mack (14.5 PPG) and KJ Lewis (14.3 PPG) are Georgetown’s leading scorers; Mack also ranks fourth in the conference with an average of four-and-a-half assists per game while Lewis leads with two-point-one steals per contest.

After facing Georgetown away from home, St.John’s will return to host Providence for its first regular season home game at Madison Square Garden on January sixth.
