St. John’s men’s tennis to face Columbia in NCAA tournament first round

The St. John’s men’s tennis team will play against Columbia in the opening round of the 2026 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship on Friday, April 27, at Boar’s Head Resort in Charlottesville, Virginia, according to an announcement from the NCAA.

This matchup is part of a national tournament featuring 64 teams. The winner of Friday’s match will advance to Sunday’s second round for a chance to compete in the NCAA Super Regionals.

It is the fourth time that St. John’s has been placed in Charlottesville for this event, following previous appearances there in 2015, 2019 and 2025. The Red Storm are making their seventh overall appearance at the NCAA Tournament after winning their fourth Big East Championship in seven seasons under Head Coach Dillon Pottish.

The team finished its season with a record of 19 wins and six losses, including an undefeated conference run and a strong finish by winning six out of their last seven matches. Last week at the Big East Championship, St. John’s won three straight matches over three days and defeated DePaul with a score of 4-1 to secure its second consecutive tournament berth.

St. John’s competes as part of NCAA Division I athletics within the Big East Conference according to the official website. The Red Storm mascot represents all university athletics programs including men’s tennis according to the official website.

Radomir Tomic led singles play this season with a record of sixteen wins and four losses while also contributing strongly in doubles alongside Danilo Raicevic and Sergej Zivkovic. Semen Agynskyy made an immediate impact during his first year after transferring from Northern Arizona University by posting thirteen singles victories and being named Most Outstanding Player at last week’s conference championship.

Columbia enters Friday’s contest with sixteen wins and seven losses overall this season as well as six victories within their conference schedule; St. John’s holds two wins against eight losses all-time versus Columbia but has never faced them before at an NCAA Tournament site.

First serve between St. John’s and Columbia is scheduled for noon.
