The St. John’s Red Storm men’s golf team completed the first two rounds of the BIG EAST Championships presented by Jeep on May 3, finishing in sixth place with an even par score at Riverton Pointe Golf Club in Hardeeville, South Carolina.
The tournament was delayed by rain before play resumed, and St. John’s recorded a combined score of 576 over the opening 36 holes. The team shot a 2-over-par 290 in the first round and improved to a 2-under-par 286 in the second round. The Red Storm are currently positioned eleven strokes behind Marquette, which leads the tournament at eleven under par.
Eli Weidmann led St. John’s efforts by tying for fifth place individually after posting back-to-back rounds of two-under-par for a total of four under par through two rounds. Weidmann finished just two shots off the individual lead and tallied nine birdies over his first day of play.
Freshman Max McColgan made his BIG EAST Tournament debut and rebounded from an early six-over start through five holes to finish tied for eighteenth with an even par score across both rounds, including eight birdies during a bogey-free stretch covering twenty-eight holes. Senior David Mlynek closed out his day one over par to move into twentieth place overall, while Joseph Dolezal ended tied for thirtieth after shooting three over across both rounds.
St. John’s Red Storm Men’s Golf is recognized as a collegiate athletic team that competes in NCAA Division I as part of the BIG EAST Conference according to the official website.
