St. John’s baseball team won the opening game of its series against Creighton, 10-3, on May 1 at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
The victory was led by Shaun McMillan, who hit two home runs in a single game for the first time in his career. St. John’s collected 12 hits as a team, marking the fifth time in six games that they have reached double-digit hits.
McMillan went three-for-four at the plate with a three-run homer and a solo shot, collecting four runs batted in and scoring twice. Cristian Bernardini also contributed with three hits, including two doubles and a solo home run. Five other players from St. John’s recorded hits during the game.
Pitcher Liam O’Leary delivered six innings of one-run baseball and struck out seven batters to earn his sixth win of the season. Victor Frederick pitched three innings of relief, allowing two runs and striking out three to secure his fourth save.
Creighton took an early lead with a solo home run in the second inning but St. John’s responded with five runs in the third inning to take control of the game for good. The Red Storm continued to build their lead throughout the middle innings with additional home runs from McMillan and Bernardini.
The teams will meet again tomorrow as St. John’s looks to clinch the series win and move ahead of Creighton in the BIG EAST standings.
