The St. John’s baseball team won against Rutgers on Apr. 21, taking a 10-5 victory at Bainton Field.
This win is significant as it marks the Red Storm’s first victory over a Big Ten opponent this season. St. John’s improved its record to 21-19 overall and 7-2 in the Big East, while Rutgers fell to an even 20-20 overall and 7-11 in the Big Ten.
St. John’s overcame an early deficit by scoring three runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. Although Rutgers tied the game in the seventh, St. John’s responded with three runs in the eighth and held on for the win.
Lewis Rodriguez, Shaun McMillan, and Cristian Bernardini each contributed two hits and two RBIs for St. John’s. Ayden Frey added a hit and an RBI, while Sean Britt walked twice and scored two runs.
After Nick Gilpin pitched two innings to start, seven relievers from St. John’s allowed just one run on two hits through the rest of the game. Thomas Harding, Nick Romer, and Kyle Chase each threw one scoreless inning without allowing a hit.
St. John’s will continue its road trip with a three-game series at Xavier beginning Friday.
