For a brief moment on Friday evening, Yankee Stadium was the scene of an unusual interruption when a squirrel ran onto the field during the top of the fourth inning in a game between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. The animal entered the batter’s box, coming into contact with Red Sox rookie Jhostynxon Garcia, marking a notable event during his debut.
The incident drew attention from both players and fans. The crowd reacted as the squirrel made its way up the third-base line before stopping on the pitcher’s mound to face Yankees left-hander Max Fried.
“That’s the first time it’s happened to me,” Fried said after the Yankees’ 1-0 loss. “My first reaction was, ‘Don’t do anything that might embarrass you.’ I thought it was just going to run around, but it came straight to me and went in the little hole I created on the mound.”
Fried described his interaction with the animal: “At one point, I think I just said, ‘OK, buddy, let’s go,’” Fried said. “He just did his thing. It’s definitely a little strange, but it’s all in good fun.”
After pausing at the mound, the squirrel crossed toward first base where Yankees player Ben Rice moved aside to avoid it.
“I didn’t want to touch that thing,” Rice said. “The guys are giving me crap for it. ‘Why are you scared of a squirrel?’ I don’t know where that thing’s been. It made a little noise at me.”
Play resumed once the squirrel ran into foul territory; however, Fried appeared unsettled and threw his next pitch off target for ball four.
Throughout this sequence, players, coaches and stadium staff watched as the animal continued along the field before eventually disappearing behind a chain-link fence covering part of Yankee Stadium’s digital scoreboard.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora commented on how quickly such moments can become memorable for fans: “Somebody’s going to make a shirt out of it and make a lot of money tomorrow,” he predicted.
