It is with deep sadness that Speaker Heastie announced the passing of former Representative Charlie Rangel. He expressed admiration for Rangel, stating, “He was a role model. As a kid growing up and getting into politics, he was a person you looked up to and wanted to emulate.” Rangel dedicated his life to public service, earning recognition such as the Purple Heart in the U.S. Army and serving in both the New York State Assembly and Congress.
Rangel was noted for being a champion for Harlem and working to improve the lives of New Yorkers and others across the nation. Speaker Heastie conveyed his condolences by saying, “My heart goes out to his family at this difficult time.”
