Rep. Nydia Velázquez, who has represented New York’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress since 1993, posted a series of statements on social media regarding recent developments in education funding and immigration detention oversight.
On July 21, 2025, Velázquez announced progress on federal education funding, stating: “VICTORY FOR OUR STUDENTS: After pressure from me and the NY delegation, the Trump administration will release 21st CCLC funds so afterschool and summer programs can move forward with certainty. But this fight isn’t over. I won’t stop until all frozen education funds are released https://t.co/DftUvIp8vB”.
Later that day, she shared an additional link via her account: “https://t.co/z7FE3vFNMt” (July 21, 2025).
The following day, Velázquez addressed concerns about conditions at a federal facility in New York City. On July 22, 2025, she wrote: “ICE has lied to keep Members of Congress out of the 10th floor at 26 Federal Plaza. This video makes it clear: this IS a detention facility, and the conditions are overcrowded, unsanitary, and inhumane. ICE must allow Congressional oversight now and shut this facility down. https://t.co/t4KyEChW9Y”.
Nydia Velázquez was born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico in 1953 and currently resides in Brooklyn. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras in 1974.
