Rep. Nydia Velázquez, who has represented New York’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress since 1993, posted a series of statements on her social media account addressing both community and national issues.
On April 5, Velázquez extended holiday greetings to her constituents: “Wishing everyone in NY-07 a Happy Easter! May this day bring peace, joy, and time well spent with the people you love.”
Two days later, on April 7, she responded to recent remarks by former President Donald Trump regarding Iran. In one post, Velázquez stated: “Trump is telling the world he intends to commit genocide against the Iranian people. Congress should return to Washington and vote to stop this immediately. Republicans must finally take a stand and end this insanity.”
Later that same day, Velázquez further commented on Trump’s statements: “Trump’s genocidal threats make clear he is unstable and unfit to serve as President. Congress must take immediate steps toward impeachment, and the 25th Amendment should be invoked. Every day he remains in office puts our nation and the world in grave danger.”
Nydia Velázquez was born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico in 1953 and currently resides in Brooklyn. She graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974.
